Not the news she expected

After I gave birth to my son, I started experiencing pain during sex and painful periods. Yet every time I saw my gynecologist, he told me that everything looked normal. So for years, my husband and I searched for answers, going to different gynecologists about my pain. It got to the point where my period was lasting for about 2 weeks every month. I was in constant pain. I couldn’t even lie down in bed at night without hurting, but we didn’t know why!

Thanksgiving night in 2017, the pain in my abdominal area was so bad that I was having trouble breathing. I felt like I was going to pass out because it hurt so badly. So my husband rushed me to the ER, where they gave me an evaluation to assess my pain and symptoms. The doctors ran different kinds of tests so they could pinpoint exactly what the cause of my pain was.

We waited for three-and-a-half hours before the doctor came to see us with the results. He entered the room with a serious look on his face and told us that I had endometriosis. Three of the lesions, he said, were bigger than a quarter, and the rest were as big as nickels.

My husband and I were stunned. We didn’t know what to say or do. The doctor prescribed pain medication and gave me a heat pack. I couldn’t believe that after all that time, I finally had an answer. Being diagnosed with endometriosis changed everything for me. I was able to put a name to the pain!

While I wish I had another option that could help me with my endo pain, I’m glad that I finally found out what was causing the pain. I feel more empowered to go to different doctors to help me find a way to manage my symptoms. I hope my story can inspire others to get the answers they need, too.
