My period started around age 11 and from the beginning, it was extremely heavy. But I thought that was normal. My mother always used to say, “It’s a period! It’s supposed to hurt.” So, for years, I didn’t realize anything was wrong.
As an adult, the third day of each period I had, there would be a sharp pain in my uterus area. It was so horrible that if I did anything, even little things like walking, I would immediately have to stop. The pain would halt me!
One day, I spoke up about this to my cousin (who is a doctor). I opened up to her and told her about all of my symptoms. She immediately told me to see a doctor. So I made an appointment with a gynecologist and everything unfolded from there. I had ultrasounds and blood tests—the whole works.
My gynecologist and I are now looking into treatment options for my painful periods. My advice for anyone reading this is that if you have painful or heavy periods, don’t assume it’s normal. Settle your mind and get it checked out.
